{"id":605,"date":"2015-07-23T18:55:29","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T00:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.idubbs.com\/blog\/?p=605"},"modified":"2015-07-23T18:55:29","modified_gmt":"2015-07-24T00:55:29","slug":"minecraft-computercraftedu-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idubbs.com\/blog\/2015\/minecraft-computercraftedu-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"Minecraft + ComputerCraftEdu \u2013 Installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A little different post topic for me\u2026 This one is about a <a href=\"https:\/\/minecraft.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Minecraft<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/minecraft.gamepedia.com\/Mods\" target=\"_blank\">mod<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Now, plenty of folks play with a variety of mods. I\u2019ve been a bit of a stickler though and haven\u2019t installed any for my kids. Partially because I\u2019m a bit of a purist. Partly because I didn\u2019t want the additional hassle of supporting them and don\u2019t want to wait to update Minecraft itself when updates roll out. (There are usually some gaps in time between when a new game version rolls out and when mods are rolled out that support the new game version) Besides, my kids are already having a blast with the basic Minecraft game and are accepting of these limitations. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smilewithtongueout\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none\" alt=\"Smile with tongue out\" src=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/wlEmoticon-smilewithtongueout.png\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Minecraft, I\u2019m <em>always<\/em> looking for kid-friendly ways to introduce and encourage basic coding skills, computational though processes, etc. I\u2019m not trying to steer them towards a career, per se, but I want to at least introduce to concepts because I believe they\u2019ll be invaluable as they grow up in this crazy world of ours.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>So, with that background, when I heard about this mod my interest was peaked (as was theirs): <a title=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/\">http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>(Incidentally, I got about this from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Code.org\" target=\"_blank\">facebook post<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/code.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Code.org<\/a> \u2013 another wonderful resource)<\/p>\n<p>Enough of my rambling. On to the steps and notes. <\/p>\n<p>So far, we have it installed so they can experiment with it locally. I\u2019d like to get it running on a server as well to see what craziness happens. These are the steps we used to install it locally. Hopefully this can help some folks get it running faster than I did initially. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smilewithtongueout\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none\" alt=\"Smile with tongue out\" src=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/wlEmoticon-smilewithtongueout.png\"> It was my first experience getting some of these things running. <\/p>\n<p>Pre-install notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First of all, the ComputerCraftEdu site does a good job of getting you started \u2013 start <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/#getting-started\" target=\"_blank\">there<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>This particular mod only works with an older version of Minecraft. As of July 23, 2015 ComputerCraftEdu is version 1.7.10 while the current version of Minecraft is 1.8.7 <br \/>No need to worry, we can work with this just fine. There are some warnings about the potential for breaking or corrupting a world (file) by opening it with the mismatched version \u2013 there are ways to help prevent this \u2013 described in the steps below.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li>\n<li>Minecraft Forge \u2013 it\u2019s a program used to manage and load mods. ComputerCraftEdu requires it to load their mod. <\/li>\n<li>WARNING: When visiting and downloading Forge BEWARE OF AD LINKS. When you click on the download links you\u2019ll see a full page add that you\u2019ll be tempted to click and you\u2019ll get some unknown, untrusted software. STAY AWAY. Look at the header and click the SKIP button to get the download you want. (image below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Steps: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Download the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/#getting-started-hidden-section\" target=\"_blank\">ComputerCraftEdu<\/a> mod (I\u2019m not going to link directly to the file \u2013 go to their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/#getting-started-hidden-section\" target=\"_blank\">page<\/a> and make sure you\u2019re getting the latest version). <br \/>Note: You might get a \u201chey, this file could be dangerous\u201d message. This is because of the type of file it is. If you\u2019re getting it from the computercraftedu.com site you should be fine. <\/li>\n<li>Go to the Minecraft Forge installer page <a href=\"http:\/\/files.minecraftforge.net\/maven\/net\/minecraftforge\/forge\/index_1.7.10.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a> (v 10.13.4.1448 \u2013 for Minecraft 1.7.10). <font color=\"#ff0000\">SEE THE WARNING ABOVE \u2013 and image below<\/font>. <\/li>\n<li>Click the \u2018Installer-win\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/adfoc.us\/serve\/sitelinks\/?id=271228&amp;url=http:\/\/files.minecraftforge.net\/maven\/net\/minecraftforge\/forge\/1.7.10-10.13.4.1448-1.7.10\/forge-1.7.10-10.13.4.1448-1.7.10-installer-win.exe\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>. <font color=\"#ff0000\">SEE THE WARNING ABOVE<\/font>.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/forgedownloadwarning.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"forgedownloadwarning\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"forgedownloadwarning\" src=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/forgedownloadwarning_thumb.png\" width=\"458\" height=\"254\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click the SKIP button \u2013 the file you want should be downloaded into the directory you choose or the default location. It should look something like: \u201cforge-1.7.10-10.13.4.1448-1.7.10-installer-win.exe\u201d (numbers may be different for newer versions)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the downloaded file location.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the file name and \u201cRun as administrator\u201d. If you are on your child\u2019s machine and it has parental controls in place you may need to enter your credentials at this time. <\/li>\n<li>\u201cDo you want to allow the following program\u2026 make changes to this computer\u201d If it is for the \u201cforge-lots of numbers.exe\u201d file, Click \u2018Yes. <\/li>\n<li>If the machine has Minecraft installed, the Forge installer will find one of the locations Minecraft files are being stored. <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/forgeinstaller.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"forgeinstaller\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"forgeinstaller\" src=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/forgeinstaller_thumb.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"235\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Before we go ahead with the installation, we\u2019re going to create a new folder that we\u2019ll use later. Click the \u2018\u2026\u2019 button to see where the files are stored. <br \/>Note: I created the folder this way because I was already at the folder\/directory location. You\u2019ll need to note the location for later\u2026 <\/li>\n<li>Create a new folder \u2013 I called mine \u201c.minecraftCCEdu\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Once the folder is created \u2013 Click \u2018Cancel\u2019. Yep. \u2018Cancel\u2019 to get back to the install screen.<\/li>\n<li>The install folder should still show the original \u201c.minecraft\u201d (as shown above). Click \u2018OK\u2019<\/li>\n<li>It should download files, unpack stuff, and successfully install Forge. <\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018OK\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Open Minecraft launcher<\/li>\n<li>In the lower-left corner of the launcher, there is a Profile drop-down control and some buttons. Note the name of the default profile (probably the name of the Minecraft user) and click \u2018New Profile\u2019. <\/li>\n<li>The Profile Name is probably something like \u201cCopy of [username]\u201d. I changed this to \u201c[Username]CCEdu\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Check the \u201cGame Directory\u201d box, and change the folder path to your new folder \u2013 \u201c.minecraftCCEdu\u201d<\/li>\n<li>for the \u201cUse version\u201d option, click the drop-down and select \u2018release 1.7.10-Forge\u2026..\u2019<br \/>It\u2019ll be the last (or close) in the list.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018Save Profile\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Select the new profile from the drop-down. <\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018Play\u2019 \u2013 There should be some Forge loading bars that are new\u2026 <\/li>\n<ol><!--EndFragment--><\/ol>\n<li>(files and folders get created in your new directory) <\/li>\n<li>Quit Game<\/li>\n<li>Copy the ComputerCraftEdu .jar file from its download directory into your new <strong>.minecraftCCedumods <\/strong>directory. <\/li>\n<li>Open Minecraft launcher<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your new profile is selected<\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018Play\u2019 <\/li>\n<li>Click \u2018Create New World\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Name it, select \u2018Game Mode Creative\u2019, Click \u2018Create New World\u2019<\/li>\n<li>To verify the mod is loaded, open your inventory. There should be a second page of options now showing \u2018ComputerCraft\u2019 and \u2018ComputerCraftEdu\u2019 icons. <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mincraftCCEduPanel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"mincraftCCEduPanel\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"mincraftCCEduPanel\" src=\"http:\/\/209.95.55.158\/~idubbsco\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mincraftCCEduPanel_thumb.png\" width=\"219\" height=\"244\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Congrats! Have fun experimenting! <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Post-install notes: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computercraftedu.com\/#help\" target=\"_blank\">Help links<\/a> to get you rolling once you\u2019re installed and configured. <\/li>\n<li>Also: <a href=\"http:\/\/services.minecraftedu.com\/wiki\/ComputerCraftEdu#Installing_ComputerCraftEdu\" target=\"_blank\">Introduction to ComputerCraftEdu<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The separate Minecraft profiles you created should keep your \u2018normal\u2019 worlds separated from your ComputerCraftEdu worlds \u2013 if you\u2019re anything like my kids you have a bunch of worlds in your profile, so this is a nice feature. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little different post topic for me\u2026 This one is about a Minecraft mod.
