{"id":35,"date":"2007-06-18T22:50:35","date_gmt":"2007-06-19T04:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/idubbs.com\/blog\/?p=35"},"modified":"2007-06-18T22:50:35","modified_gmt":"2007-06-19T04:50:35","slug":"new-orleans-may-2007-recap-1-of-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idubbs.com\/blog\/2007\/new-orleans-may-2007-recap-1-of-4\/","title":{"rendered":"New Orleans (May 2007) Recap (1 of 4)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, I went down to New Orleans as part of a volunteer effort to assist with the cleanup and rebuilding efforts from Hurricane Katrina.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This is the 3rd trip that the Pohlad Family of Companies has sponsored to New Orleans and the 2nd that folks from Inetium were able to participate in.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We had about 70 people from all the Pohlad companies (Wow!), with 4 of us from Inetium:<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Val, Dan, John and myself.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">I intended to do a bit of blogging while we were down in New Orleans, but it just wasn&#8217;t realistic with how packed our schedule was and how tired I was while we were there.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>So, here it is after the fact:<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">So, what were we doing?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We were working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccano.org\/operation_helping_hands.htm\">Catholic Charities<\/a> organization by contributing our &#8216;people&#8217; power to projects that Catholic Charities have lined up &#8211; which up until now has been gutting water damaged houses, but going forward will start to include rebuilding projects.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We were excited to find out that some of our crews were able to do some painting and repairing while the rest of us continued with the gutting and cleanup effort.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">Dan and I were on the crew that gutted all three days while Val and John painted for a few days and then gutted on the last day (I think).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There are a lot of pictures (links below) which do a good job of illustrating what we did and what things looked like, but &#8216;gutting&#8217; essentially means that we removed everything from the house and then stripped it down to the bare studs and wood flooring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Day 1 &#8211; Friday<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">We flew in and gathered for the first time at the airport.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Most of us came from the Twin Cities and were on the same flight down and back, which was fun.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A bunch of us then went on a bus tour of the city.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This wasn&#8217;t a typical bus tour you would get when going to cities around the world where the sites and scenes are pointed out and described.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This was a tour of the devastation that Katrina dealt this city and of some of the rebuilding that has happened since &#8211; with both historic and more recent stories.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We even drove by the tour guide&#8217;s house and neighborhood to see how he was personally affected.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Hearing peoples&#8217; personal stories was an incredibly powerful way to learn about what really happened and how things are really going in New Orleans.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The news coverage does NOT do it justice.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri\">Once we got to the hotel, we were able to sneak out briefly for dinner before returning for an organizational meeting with the whole group and introductions to our teams and crew leaders.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>After the meeting, we decided to hit Bourbon Street and do our part to support the local economy.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>\ud83d\ude42<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We ended up at a jazz club &#8211;
