Just a few little tidbits to keep in mind when creating an Office 365 account, for trial or other reasons. When signing up for your account, you are asked to define a \u2018New domain name’\u00a0 (at the bottom of the image)<\/p>\n

I find this a little confusing because most of us identify a \u2018domain name\u2019 as your sites main URL \u2013 like \u201cidubbs.com\u201d.\u00a0 What the registration is asking for isn\u2019t the same thing.\u00a0 Being part of Microsoft\u2019s \u2018cloud\u2019 offering, Office365\u2019s domain name is \u201conmicrosoft.com\u201d.\u00a0 They are asking for a subdomain name to use and be unique on their environment.\u00a0 The \u2018real\u2019 domain that you\u2019ll likely be adding to the site later can also be used to log on, but so will the \u2018domain\u2019 name you are specifying at registration time. You may change your \u2018real\u2019 domain names, but your \u2018onmicrosoft.com domain name\u2019 will never change.<\/p>\n

So \u2013 WHAT we\u2019re talking about should now be fairly clear.\u00a0 The trivia that I\u2019d like to call out is the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. At present, domain names can only be used for a single account\/site one time. If you create a trial account and then close it, you can\u2019t create another account with the same domain name.<\/li>\n
  2. Domain names cannot be moved between the \u2018major\u2019 plan levels. For example, you can upgrade from E1 to E3, but you can\u2019t take a domain from P1 to E1.<\/li>\n
  3. Domain names cannot be edited or changed. They stick forever.<\/li>\n
  4. Even if you add a real<\/em> domain name to your account, the 365 domain name is still used in a few places. I can\u2019t remember the other one I ran into, but the first place \u2013 that I still see from time to time, bugs me and<\/em> is public facing \u2013 is when you send a Lync meeting link.\u00a0 It looks something like:
    \n    https:\/\/meet.lync.com\/[YourUnchangeableDomainName]\/
    \n[SomePartOfYourName]\/[SomethingTotallyRandom<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So, if you\u2019re really creating a test trial, don\u2019t use a name that you might want to use for real. In fact, use something almost completely irrelevant if you want. It would look better in that Lync URL than something that might seem dated or just wrong.<\/p>\n

    When you create your actual 365 account put at least a little thought into the domain name, even though it will mostly be behind the scenes. Think about how your marketing department might react to an old brand term showing up in that Lync URL when sending meeting invites and links to your customers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
