I just read a blog post<\/a> by Chandima Kulathilake (MVP)<\/a>\u00a0this evening that I wanted to throw a\u00a0few thoughts out about.\u00a0 The post (read the whole thing, its worth it) was initially about the pending availability of SP2 for the 2007 platform –\u00a0but what really caught my eye was a description of an update method that I hadn’t considered before.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In many cases, when patching\u00a0SharePoint environments\u00a0we tend to simply schedule downtime and run the patches on the whole system in one fell swoop.\u00a0 As many of us are aware and Chandima reminds us, this can sometimes take a number of hours to complete\u00a0depending on the size of the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The particular scenario that Chandima identifies is one where you may have one or more sites that\u00a0have high-availability requirements where downtime must be kept to a minimum.\u00a0 In this case,\u00a0you can by following his steps, upgrade one content database at a time.\u00a0 This allows you to bring\u00a0the site or sites in that content database\u00a0BACK ONLINE\u00a0and\u00a0then proceed with upgrading each of the other content databases\u00a0 while the one that has completed is available.\u00a0 Bear in mind,\u00a0the performance of the sites that are up are likely to take a hit due to both the full crawl that will start\u00a0and\u00a0the upgrading of the rest of the content databases as they are\u00a0reattached to the farm.\u00a0 But even if the performance isn’t up to its normal level, the sites are available.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With this\u00a0upgrade approach\u00a0in mind, you may also want to think about your content database strategy (yes, I ramble about this topic regularly).\u00a0 The upgrade\u00a0and high-availability advantages\u00a0puts yet another slant on how you\u00a0plan content databases,\u00a0sites and webs.\u00a0\u00a0For example, if you have a site that you know is going to be high-availability, based on the information above, you may want to isolate it in its own content database even thought\u00a0the site may not otherwise justify that strategy.\u00a0 Remember, you also have\u00a0tools available that can help move sites or\u00a0webs around\u00a0between content databases, allowing you to isolate sites during or\u00a0after their creation if necessary.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

I’m really not saying\u00a0much more than what Chandima mentions in his post, but I\u00a0was pretty jazzed about it and\u00a0wanted to elaborate even more on that point.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\u00a0Well done Chandima.<\/p>\n

Along\u00a0related lines, another good reference link<\/a> to keep handy is a page kept up by\u00a0Penny Coventry (MVP).\u00a0 I’ve found myself\u00a0pointing folks to this regularly\u00a0when\u00a0they ask how to tell what version they are on\u00a0and what the\u00a0latest versions are.<\/p>\n
