I ran across what I considered an obscure issue the other day and wasn’t able to find much for solutions – so here are a few details in the hopes that they might be helpful to someone else down the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The short answer:\u00a0 Are you\u00a0having weird issues with\u00a0a SharePoint page?\u00a0\u00a0Are you using Content Editor Web Parts?\u00a0 Check them to see if you’ve accidentally introduced incomplete or error-prone HTML.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
The longer answer:
\nI have a client that was\u00a0attempting to edit a SharePoint site that had the publishing features enabled.\u00a0 The user had\u00a0full control and had checked out the page.\u00a0 They had a number of lists on the site and a bunch of web parts in several zones on the page.\u00a0 Two different issues were found.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Issue #1:<\/span> “An unexpected error has occurred”<\/p>\n When returning to the site it says the following:<\/p>\n “Your current editing session has expired.\u00a0 Before editing or saving any content you must refresh this page.”<\/p>\n When\u00a0refreshing the page\u00a0all changes are lost.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Issue #2:<\/span> Notes:<\/span> Answer:<\/span>
\nWhen editing the page, even if only for a few seconds (like to move a web part) – then\u00a0saving or publishing – \u00a0the page would time out with the following error:<\/p>\n
\nAlso when in edit mode, when clicking on the ‘edit’\u00a0dropdown on one of the web parts, nothing would happen.\u00a0 The\u00a0edit dropdown would work just fine on the other web parts.\u00a0 (this should have been\u00a0my first clue to the answer)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\nBoth issues are\u00a0isolated to this page and this site only.\u00a0
\nNo issues were\u00a0seen in the Events logs or the SharePoint logs.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\nThere were also a few Content Editor Web Parts on the page.\u00a0 They both appeared to be working just fine.\u00a0 When looking at the source for each of them, they included tags that were not necessary.\u00a0 Tags that likely came from cutting and pasting from other applications.\u00a0 Once these tags were removed, the normal functionality was restored.\u00a0 The HTML from one or both of the Content Editor Web Parts was interfering with the HTML and code on other parts of the page.\u00a0 What is normally considered a simple web part caused a not-so-simple issue from the user’s perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n
